You have finally created your own unique web pages, so now it is time to upload them to your server whether you have registered your own personal domain name or are using one of the many free hosting packages that are available.

 

Direct FTP makes transferring files from your computer to the server easy by dragging and dropping, select one file, several files, or whole folders from the left file window, drag and drop into the right server window.

Questions - Answers

Q. I cannot delete some files and folders on my server?
A. It is nearly always because an online application has created the files or folders as a different user. You will need your host to check the user/owner and delete them for you.

Q. I have uploaded, but can not see my web site. Why not?
A. Make sure that you uploaded your files to the correct folder in your FTP space. Your Web hosting provider will have have told you where to upload your files to, either a folder called "public_html" or "webroot".
Make sure that your main page is either index.htm or index.html.

Q. My FTP just hangs - it is so annoying. How can I stop this?
A. Try un-checking Passive Mode in the server profile, and connecting, if the program still will not connect, take a look Here.

Q. How do I download folders or files from my server?
A. For Files, make sure you have created a folder on your hard drive to place your files from your server. Open your DIRECT FTP, you will see two columns, locate the files on your server in the right column, locate your destination folder in the left column. Highlight your files and drag them to your folder on your computer. If you want to drag a folder from your server, open the destination path in the left column and drag the folder from the server to your computer.

Q. How do I change the CHMOD permissions of a file or folder on the server?
A. First, click on the File or folder whose attributes you wish to change.
Next, click on the 'Permissions Button' on the 'My Site Toolbar' and a box will popup where you can enter a numeric value.
The only only ones that should really apply to you are:-
644 - Do not allow writing to this file.
666 - Allow this file to be written to.
755 - Do not allow files to be written to this folder.
777 - Allow files to be written to thia folder.
You cannot set permissions on a Windows Server.

 

Tips and Tricks

  • You can drag and drop files from windows explorer into the server side of Direct FTP.
  • You can download a site backup using the Built-in Zip archiver icon.
  • Drag a file into the File Editor Window and change the content while it is still on the server.
  • Download multiple folders by selecting them in the Server window and drag them into the Local window.
  • YOu can view your images while on the Server
