Questions - Answers - Code Editor

Q. I don't understand what snippets are or how to use them?
A. A snippet is simply a re-usable piece of code that you can use over and over again without having to keep retyping it. For example, you can create a snippet if you want to have a clock Javascript running on all your web pages, or if you wanted an easy way of duplicating a table for every page.

Q. Is there an easy way to help me find elements on my web page that I am working on? I am a Newbie and still find HTML a bit confusing?
A. You can do this is by using a 'Comment'. For example, let us say that you have just created your first ever Table and you wanted to make it easy for yourself to find it in the future so you could make changes to. If that was the case, then all you need do is:-
Click on Insert then Comment.
Type in what comment you want to make. Here for example, you could type in 'My First Table'. To finish just press 'Cool'.
Now you have made it very easy for yourself to find your table when you next need to work on it. Just look or search in your code for where 'My Fisrt Table' appears.

Q. I would love to use CSS, but know nothing. Any suggestions?
A. HTML Editor has a great thing called 'Layouts'. These are CSS and you can choose from lots of different templates.
Go take a look by doing this:-
Click on File
New From Layout
Then choose a template, For example 'LayoutGala01'
Now you have a working site using CSS.

Q. I can not see the right side of the program interface?
A. The reason you cannot see the right hand side is because you are using Large Custom DPI settings. You will need to change this to a Normal DPI for the program to work.
To change the settings go to your Desktop and then right mouse button and select properties.
Next click on the Settings Tab and then click on Advanced.
You will now see a DPI setting.
This needs to be set to Normal, or 96 DPI.
After you make the change reboot your system and you should be all set.

Tips and Tricks

  • Visual Editing (WYSIWYG) is best for New pages and Beginners and Code Editing is best for Existing pages or if you already have a basic knowledge of HTML.
  • Saving your page after it has been altered by WYSIWYG is permanent and can not be reversed.
  • Be Careful when going back and forth between modes and only Save the page you are happy with after you have reviewed your HTML in the Code Editor.
  • Save a piece of code you use all the time as a Snippet and just drag it into your page when you need it. No need to type it out any longer.
  • If this is your first webpage, and it will be located on your own domain name like www.yourname.com, you should save the file as index.html
  • Create a larger edit area by clicking on the arrow icon and unpinning the left panel. This gives you almost a third more space to work in. Just click in an area around the tabs to access the panel again.
  • Not sure what images or links you have in your page, no problem. Just use the Document Dependencies tool to see all the images and all the External links.
  • Do you need to make a change to many files at once and you dont want to search through each file individually? You can use the Find and Replace tool under Edit to replace the item in all files in a folder.
  • We have added a XHTML conversion tool for converting old HTML pages to the new XHTML format. This can be found under the Document toolbar menu.
  • Novice and advanced Webmasters alike will love the new Visual Editor feature in the program. You dont have to edit the HTML code any longer if you dont want to, just drag and drop.
  • The Open from Web feature is nice if you dont want to go through the process of connecting via FTP, downloading the file then finally opening it in the Editor. Now, type in the URL of the page you want to edit and the program will open that page and allow you to make your changes.
  • Are you trying to find a solution to your website navigation problem? The solution is located under Insert > DHTML Items > DHTML Menu. This tool allows you to create professional looking drop down menus for navigation.
  • Tables are a great way to lay out your webpage in a very specific manner. The Table Wizard allows you to generate the code for those tables and it will also save the table design so you can come back and edit it later.
  • Another great time saver is the Style Sheet Wizard, it allows you to create a style for a certain HTML tags or for a class you specify. All point and click of course.
  • Insert an image and create a thumbnail view for that image all in a few quick clicks. You can also make the image a link to another page on your site or another website all together.
  • All the most used tools are now located directly above the Edit area in both Editor modes. No need to go hunting for that great tool any longer.
  • HTML Editor 2007 has everything you need to create great web pages.
